Thousands of Future Tsunami Engineers Test their Designs

NEES@OSU Outreach Director Alicia Lyman-Holt, Howard professor Claudia Marin-Artieda, students from Howard University and Oregon State University, and volunteers from NSF educated thousands of children and their families about tsunamis during the Discover Engineering Family Day at the National Science Museum in Washington DC on February 20.

Using the NEES mini-wave flume, developed at the NEES@OSU site, children built “tsunami-resistant structures” and tested their performance against oncoming waves. NEES Ambassadors from Howard University and Oregon State University also shared their excitement about the engineering profession and the path K-12 students can follow to enter engineering careers.
