On 23 October 2011, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the province of Van in eastern Turkey. The earthquake claimed 604 lives. Most of the losses occurred in the town of Erciş (pop. est. 80,000), located approximately 40 km NNW from the epicenter, where nearly 200 buildings experienced total or partial collapse. The provincial capital Van (pop. est. 330,000) was relatively spared with only six building collapses even though the capital was located only 15 km SSW from the earthquake region.

Teams from the Middle East Technical University, lead by the METU-Earthquake Engineering Research Center, inspected over 300 buildings in these two towns and documented the level of structural and non-structural damage. The survey is used to identify building characteristics which related to presence or absence of damage.

On 9 November 2011, a magnitude 5.7 shallow depth earthquake struck approximately 10 km SW of the provincial capital Van. This second earthquake claimed 40 lives, caused 25 buildings to collapse in the capital, and brought life in the city to a standstill.

The METU-EERC team revisited the provincial capital and re-inspected over 130 buildings previously surveyed. Engineering observations from both earthquakes, including evolution of damage in the back-to-back shaken buildings in the provincial capital will be presented. Recommendations as to what should have been done and needs to be done will be discussed.
