Improving the Seismic Performance of Concentrically Braced Frames: Proposed Design and Analysis Procedures

Description: “Improving Seismic Performance of Concentrically Braced Frames” is the fourth in a series of Research to Practice Webinars co-produced by the Network for Earthquake Engineering (NEES) and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). Concentrically braced frames (CBFs) are practical and economical for seismic design, but the inelastic performance of CBFs is more complex and less well understood than many other structural systems. The NEESR small group research project, International Hybrid Simulation of Tomorrow's Braced Frame Systems, investigated these issues using experimental and analytical research methods. The results were combined to develop a new design method that balances the inelastic action within the CBF.

The experimental research investigated important design parameters by studying more than 40 large-scale specimens. The specimens investigated current design methods and improved design, with an emphasis on the gusset plate connection and balancing inelastic action in the brace and its gusset plate connections to maximum the cyclic drift capacity. All of the specimens in this significant experimental program were analyzed with both elastic and inelastic models using the ANSYS and OpenSees computer programs. The combined analytical studies have resulted in practical yet accurate modeling and evaluation procedures.

In this presentation, Professors Charles Roeder and Dawn Lehman, University of Washington will present the experimental results, analytical modeling effort, and the resulting design and analysis models that are appropriate for immediate use in the design office. Most importantly, a balanced design procedure for the gusset plates, which significantly improves the seismic performance of the system, will be presented. The impact of the proposed system on improved seismic performance will be emphasized throughout the webinar.
