| Description: | Expand the Possibilities for New Projects that Educate the Public about STEM Principles Public Works for Public Learning International Conference June 20–22, 2012, San Francisco, California ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District is the recipient of a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish an outdoor exhibition that will use the Golden Gate Bridge to educate the public about the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) principles underlying in its infrastructure. WHY SHOULD I ATTEND The conference, Public Works for Public Learning, will review the project’s efforts, offering ready‐to‐use practical information on how existing structures can be used to develop and fund effective exhibits to educate the public, featuring the history and engineering behind the Golden Gate Bridge. Learn about funding opportunities to expand your education and outreach programs, how to access federal set‐asides, and develop ideas for tapping into Federal and local funding sources. This will be an opportunity to teach the public, educate them about your role in the public fabric, and provide a contribution to future generations. The Keynote speaker is Dr. G. Wayne Clough, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Both large and small public works with successful visitor centers that provide income and educate the public will be represented, including the Eiffel Tower, Panama Canal, Hoover Dam, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Affordable registration includes a field trip to the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge to interact with the exhibits featuring the Bridge and to enjoy the many area improvements which were made for the Bridge’s 75th Anniversary. Discounted room rates have been arranged at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in San Francisco, a four‐star hotel located near all the amenities the city has to offer. An optional evening reception on June 20 will provide an opportunity to meet with the conference speakers and exhibit designers to ask questions, or simply mingle.
