Research to Practice: Lessons Learned from the Performance of a Base Isolated Hospital in Christchurch  edit    delete

Category: Webinar
Description:

Register now.
In the next webinar in the NEES/EERI research to practice series, Drs. Robert Nigbor (NEES@UCLA) and Henri Gavin (Duke University) will discuss their observations regarding conventional and base-isolated buildings that they instrumented during the aftershock sequence of the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquakes.

The sequence of earthquakes and aftershocks in Canterbury NZ from 2010-2011 provided a unique opportunity to capture perishable data on the response of full-scale structures to strong ground motions. Seismic response monitoring networks were temporarily installed in a number of buildings in Christchurch (including the Ibis Hotel and the Christchurch Women's Hospital). This webinar will review this instrumentation program and will describe the nature of the motions recorded. In particular, instrumentation in the base-isolated Women's Hospital captured dozens of triggers during the December 23, 2011 earthquake swarm. Processing and analysis of this data, in combination with field observations has provided insight into the behavior of this structure.
