Abstract

The inDEED (interactive Display for Earthquake Engineering Data) tool offers NEEShub researchers a way to process, visualize, analyze and compare their experimental and numerical earthquake simulation data. inDEED can also be used by the NEES research community and other NEEShub users to access the earthquake data archived in the NEES project warehouse http://neeshub.org/warehouse/  for processing, visualization and analysis.

With inDEED, researchers can create single-sensor or multi-sensor plots for viewing and analyzing data. These plots can be modified by changing axes titles and limits, zooming in on particular parts of the plot, changing the plot colors, and raising or lowering plots relative to one another. The inDEED tool also allows researchers to calculate and plot the average of two or more data sets as well as the difference between two data sets. The graphs created in inDEED can be exported to either comma delimited files or image files, and there are multiple image file formats available. 

Researchers can easily create input for inDEED from comma or tab-delimited data files. For example, a researcher's Excel spreadsheet listing sensors and experimental data readings can be saved as a CSV file and loaded into inDEED for plotting. Additional information about the project and sensors will enhance inDEED visualization and analysis. The  Specimen Authoring Tool at NEEShub https://neeshub.org/resources/authortool/ is an easy-to-use tool for creating project views and adding the sensor information used by inDEED to make sensor selection and graphing easier and more powerful.

inDEED offers advanced visual analytic capability that includes

  • single and multiple sensor graphs 
  • sensor data over time and sensor vs. sensor graphs
  • experimental and numerical simulation graphs
  • interactive visualization features such as zoom in/out, raise/lower, recolor, hide/show
  • time and data window ranges (min, max)
  • data value display and tagging
  • integrated analysis functions
  • virtual sensors -- average, difference of user selected sensors
  • graph save to image file, with interactive selection of image type, image size, legend fonts, text positioning 

and much, much more ... 

inDEED is important because it offers significant analysis capabilities for post-processing experimental and numerical simulation data, not only for a researchers own project data but for all community shared data archived in the NEES project warehouse. It provides a visual way for researchers to "tell the story" of their project to the NEES community and to NEEShub users across the world.
