Abstract

It is often a challenge in academia to present research results in a relevant and accessible manner to both the public and the earthquake engineerin profession. In addition to presenting technical concepts to colleagues, it is critical for academics to engage in effective communication of results and findings developed to broader audiences. A framework for developing viewer-oriented high impact modular videos to showcase NEES research is developed. Features include the use of project warehouse to store video components, in addition to providing access to metadata, reports, activities, and additional media. Best practices are provided for leveraging research programs to produce education, outreach, and training content in this technological medium. Benefits include meaningful dissemination of research findings, engagement of the public in discussion of earthquake engineering topics, and creation of teaching modules with content rooted in quality research programs.

Introduction

The purpose of this best practices document is to equip the reader to leverage advanced research work and results obtained through NEES funding to produce high quality videos for the purpose of education, outreach and training. This document was developed throughout several testing programs taking place at the Illinois NEES MUST-SIM facility and is intended for use by researchers and educators prior to the start of the experimental phase of a project. Motivation for the document comes from the success and impact that these videos developed at Illinois have had in public outreach and education at K-12 levels.

Earthquake Engineering Component

The examples given and the experience gained in the development of this document were achieved through the context of research at the Illinois NEES MUST-SIM facility. Earthquake engineering is of particular interest to the general public and therefore EOT efforts are of significant importance in increasing public awareness and education.

Learning Objectives and Standards

There are plenty of learning objectives to be applied to the videos beign developed, not to the document being used as a resource to develop these videos.

Material List

Videocamera, personal amplification kit, lighting kits, as well as video and photo editing software.

Procedure

Survey the document and refer to its contents when developing EOT videos at a local site.

Extensions

This activity is connected to any NEES-funded project at a NEES facility, to produce high quality data-rich videos for education, outreach, and training.

Scaling

This activity is for use by site staff and graduate students wiching to develop material that can be scaled to different grade levels and target user groups.
