Water-borne debris generated during tsunami events represents a significant threat to structures in coastal zones. In order to ensure performance of the structure during tsunami and flood events, it is important to estimate the impact forces generated by the collision of debris. This paper presents the full-scale experimental results of in-air impact tests involving a wood utility pole, a steel tube and a shipping container. Moreover, experimental results are compared with a proposed estimation method and existing methods from current code provisions. It has been found that the proposed method is in good agreement with the test results. The presented model can be used in design guidelines to define design values for debris impact loads.
