Experiment-5: NEG Micon 53.6m Ambient Vibration Without Gearbox, Rotor, or Soil Accelerometers

Description: Following Experiments 1-4, a fifth series of tests was conducted during March 26- May 13, 2009. Additional ambient vibration testing was conducted on the same 900 kW NEG Micon 53.6m high wind turbine of Experiments 1-4 (no soil surface accelerometers were deployed in this series of tests). In this particular testing phase, the wind turbine Gearbox and Rotor had been removed, thus allowing for measurement of the response in the absence of these major components. The experiment was conducted at Oak Creek Energy Systems near Mojave, California using the NEES@UCLA mobile testing field laboratory. Accelerometers were installed at stations in the turbine tower, and on the foundation. Acceleration response was recorded simultaneously, including vertical, side-to-side, and fore-aft motion components at each fixed station. These dynamic field tests are the first to be presented for such a highly instrumented modern Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT). Therefore, this test series provides a unique opportunity to determine the dynamic properties of the turbine under in-situ conditions.
