Experiment Type: Shake Table
Description: A 2/5 scale model of a 3-span, curved steel plate girder bridge was tested on multiple shake tables. This experiment focused on the effect of pounding in seat-type abutments. A concrete backwall in series with a set of nonlinear springs were used to simulate the presence of the approach embankment. An initial seismic gap was included based on the design service loads. The purpose of this experiment is to examine the effect of abutment pounding on the seismic response of the bridge.
