UNLV’s Applied Geophysics Center (AGC) had a Small Grant for Exploratory Research from the National Science Foundation to use the NEES@UTexas Liquidator vibroseis for seismic surface wave measurements in the Las Vegas and Pahrump Valleys, Nevada. Testing was conducted over the period November 4-15, 2008. The purpose of this study is to determine subsurface shear-wave velocity (Vs) profiles. The Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) method was used to profile six locations. Two are located in Stewart Valley, Nye County, Nevada. Four locations were tested in the Las Vegas Valley, Clark County. For the six locations tested, six Vs profiles will be evaluated. The Vs profiles will be correlated with related, previous studies. This project is complementary to the AGC’s ongoing Earthquakes in Southern Nevada project.

A dynamic signal analyzer (Data Physics) was used to measure responses from pairs of 1-Hz geophones, at spacings ranging from 2 to more than 300 meters. The Liquidator was used in stepped sine configuration for spacings of 10 m and greater. An instrumented hammer was used for shorter spacings. The time records were transformed into the frequency domain. For each measurement, the phase difference and signal coherence were saved as functions of frequency. The files are provided in ASCII format in the “experiment” branch of this record. These files can be read by any simple notepad software. (hide)
