Download Button for Resources

I wish that the download button for resources would allow you to either open the file with the appropriate application or allow you to save the file on your computer. When I tried to download the June 2010 Learning Object for the workshop, the pdf version of the presentation opened in my browser. I was hoping to save the file to a local directory on my computer.

    Kari,

This behavior is actually set by your web browser, rather than the hub itself. The hub has no control over what applications launch when a user clicks the download link, or any other. For most files, the default settings of your browser will provide the functionality you wish. For PDF files, Adobe commonly installs its plugin when you install the adobe reader program. This plugin modifies your browser’s behavior such that pdf files are displayed in the browser, rather than prompting you with a message to ask what you would like to do with it. There are a few ways you can get the desired result:

    1. Save a copy of the file to a local directory: When the PDF opens inside your browser, there should be a frame around it with common document functions, such as a menu tool bar. Using that, you should be able to save the file as a copy on a local directory.

    2. You can disable this feature in Adobe settings. The following url provides instructions for how to do this: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/17/disable-pdf-from-opening-in-web-browser-ie-firefox-opera-safari/

I hope this reply was useful to you,

    Ian
