PEN - Selective Upload

In PEN 1.4.2 and earlier versions of PEN it is possible to upload a directory and the sub-directories/files in that directory. I wish that it was possible to select specific files or directories to upload. For example, say I have an experiment with 14 trials and I update two of those trials. I wish I could select those two trials and only upload them. When I upload the whole experiment, the upload process takes much longer than needed because PEN is checking all of the experiment files for upload. When I upload just one trial at a time, I have to wait around my computer for the first trial to upload so I can select the second trial.

    Kari,

    Thank you for your feedback concerning PEN. In PEN 1.4.0 and later, we actually have a feature which helps with this. While it is not exactly as you describe, I believe it will help you to make PEN work better for you. The feature we have implemented is an “Ignore” option in the right-click menu of every object. When you “Ignore” an object, that object can no longer be edited, uploaded, downloaded, or checksumed in PEN. This behavior extends to tasks which are initiated on a node above it. Let us consider your example: You have an experiment with 14 trials. To make PEN faster, let’s say you decide that when you’re done with trials, you mark them as “Ignored”, which does nothing to the files in the warehouse, but lets PEN know that you don’t want it to do anything with those. When you wish to upload 2 trials, simply ignore the others. Ignored items have an “Unignore” option in the right-click menu, which will remove the ignore status for that item. We will consider this wish for future releases of PEN. However, I hope you will find the existing feature to be useful to you.

    Thank you for using PEN, and for providing feedback. With the release of PEN 2.0.0, in conjunction with NEEShub Release 4, we believe this wish has been granted. You can now select multiple items and run the upload command only on those items, with no need to use the ‘ignore’ feature to work around any restrictions. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments regarding the implementation of this feature. Bugs and other problems with this feature should be submitted as tickets to our support system.
