This is the second in a series of two NEES/EERI Research-to-Practice webinars discussing NEES Projects and their affiliated studies on architectural precast façade. Based on the findings of three NEES projects and related component tests discussed in the first webinar, key aspects of the design of architectural precast concrete facade systems are summarized in this second webinar. Additional support of the Charles Pankow Foundation and the Precast Concrete Institute led to the development of a design guide for practitioners from this effort. This design-oriented discussion will focus on detailing of the façade connection to the building using either flexing or sliding-type configurations, with an emphasis on selecting configurations that support the connections need to accommodate building-induced inter-story drift demands. In addition, a new, ductile corner connection design is introduced, the underlying concept of which allows designers to minimize joint widths conventionally required of non-impacting precast concrete panel elements.
