NEES@Berkeley project highlight: NEES TIPS Seismic Isolation Hybrid Simulation
These experimental research tests at NEES@Berkeley are part of a larger project titled "NEESR-SG: TIPS - Tools to Facilitate Widespread Use of Isolation and Protective Systems, a NEES/E-Defense Collaboration" funded by the National Science Foundation under award number CMMI-1113275. At the NEES@Berkeley lab, researchers designed and built a unique hybrid shaking table to run tests of a two story seismically isolated steel specimen. The shake platform was used to perform a wide variety of tests, including ones where the isolation plane was located in more economical locations such as the top of columns or over several stories to eliminate the need for a moat at a the base of a building. The portion of the building below the isolation plane is numerically simulated during these hybrid shaking table tests. The team is also using their testing to better understand the behavior of isolated buildings when yielding occurs in the superstructure, and to develop better analytical models that can more accurately characterize seismically isolated building performance.
