NEES@Berkeley project highlight: Hybrid Testing of Squat RC Shear Walls
These experimental research tests at NEES@Berkeley are part of a larger project titled "NEESR-SG: Performance-based Design of Squat Reinforced Concrete Walls" funded by the National Science Foundation under award number CMMI-0829978. Hybrid testing was conducted at NEES@Berkeley to evaluate the performance of several concrete wall specimens with a low aspect ratio (wall height/wall length). Walls of this type are often used as the primary seismic lateral-force-resisting components in nuclear and industrial facilities, thus the research attempts to reduce uncertainties in characterizing their behavior. For this project, the researchers at UC Berkeley developed a new high precision displacement encoder for use during the hybrid testing to apply small force increments to the stiff wall specimens.
