The CSV File Format
The CSV file format was created in order to provide additional information about data files and is optional for researchers. inDEED can utilize a non-formatted data file as long as it is saved as a csv file. An example of the full CSV file format is shown below.
# Project Name # Project PI(s) # Project Information... Sensor_Data raw Sensor_Name Clock LC_1 SG_1 SG_2 Sensor_Type Clock Load_Cell Strain_Gage Strain_Gage Sensor_Direction n ns ew Measurement_Type time force strain strain Sensor_Unit seconds kip µ µ Sensor_Time 0 0 0 0.00 0.00 0.5 2 0.010 -0.005
In addition to the full CSV file format, a simplified CSV file format that includes only the sensor names and data can also be utilized by inDEED. The simplified CSV file is useful for projects that organize their data in multiple files. For such projects a single "header" CSV file can be used to load the sensor descriptions (Sensor_Data, Sensor_Name, Sensor_Type, Sensor_Direction, Measurement_Type, Sensor_Unit, and Sensor_Time). The "header" CSV file would contain the sensor descriptions only. The sensor data could be supplied in a single CSV file or multiple CSV files. An example of the simplified CSV file format is shown below.
Clock LC_1 SG_1 SG_2 0 0 0.00 0.00 0.5 2 0.010 -0.005 0.6 2 0.010 -0.005 0.7 1 0.050 -0.003
Any line staring with the # symbol is treated as text and is ignored by the Authoring and inDEED tools. The text lines provide the researcher with the opportunity to provide additional information about the experiment data files. The user can provide any number of text lines as long as they begin with the # symbol.
Additional fields include:
Sensor_Data -- Defines the data type. Choices include raw, converted, corrected, or derived.
Sensor_Name -- Defines the name of the sensor. The name can be any combination of letters, numbers, or symbols. When time is also provided, the sensor name should be Clock or Time in order to distinguish it from the other sensors.
Sensor_Type -- Defines the kind of sensor being used. A full list of the sensor types identified by the inDEED development team can be seen below. It is important to note that the sensor type is case-sensitive and must be capitalized.
- "Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter"
- "Conductivity Sensor"
- "Cone Penetrometer"
- "Dynamic Measurement System"
- "Load Cell"
- "Linear Variable Differential Transformer"
- "Linear Position Encoder"
- "Pressure Transducer"
- "Pore Pressure Transducer"
- "Position Transducer"
- "Strain Gage"
- "String Potentiometer"
- "Turbidity Sensor"
- "Wave Gage"
- "User Defined"
Sensor_Direction -- Defines the orientation of the sensor on the specimen. A full list of the directions identified by the inDEED development team can be seen below. It is important to note that direction is case insensitive.
Description Direction North South ns East West ew Up Down updown Up up Down down North n South s East e West w Northwest nw Southwest sw Northeast ne Southeast se None ""
Measurement_Type -- Defines the kind of measurement being taken. A full list of the measurement types identified by the inDEED development team can be seen below.
Sensor_Units -- Defines the measurement unit for the sensor. It is important to note that this is the measurement unit for the data provided not the expected engineering unit for the sensor. For example, if you provide the raw data for an LVDT that outputs voltage, the "Sensor_Unit" would be volts not units of displacement. A full list of the sensor units identified by the inDEED development team can be seen below.
