Experiment-3: 2010 Large-Scale Concrete Pipeline Test with Custom-Designed Segment

Description: Reinforced concrete segmental pipeline buried in sand was subjected to ground faulting. Commercially manufactured pipe segments and one custom build heavily reinforced segment was used in the experiment, each with the length of 2.44 m (8 ft) and outer diameter of 42 cm (16.5 in); the total pipeline length was 12.5 m (41 ft). The pipeline was heavily instrumented with sensors for measuring displacements, strain, axial loads, and concrete damage. The sensors for measuring damage included copper conductive tape, conductive grout, magnetic proximity sensors, fiber optics, and acoustic emission sensors. The data from all instrumentation sensors were recorded continuously during the test. Substantial damage occurred at the joints, with major modes of deformation including rotation and telescoping of the bell and spigot joints.
