Description: These tests were conducted in January 2010 and were considered "pilot" tests for the overall Combined Tsunami-Swell tests, which were conducted in March 2010. Since the combination of a tsunami with random or monochromatic swell wave fields was as of yet not attempted in the lab for a NEES project, we wished to see what sort of obstacles would be encountered in performing these tests. In these experiments, the heights of the swell and tsunami were also tested so that the whole stroke of the wavemaker was used. Two configurations of the combined swell and tsunami signals were eventually used as a result of these trials: one with the tsunami in the middle of the swell, and another with the tsunami at the end of the swell time series. Additionally we were able to create drive signals for generating irregular waves at the wavemaker. The individual trials comprise a wide variety of conditions, including tsunami-only, swell-only, tsunamis combined with monochromatic waves, and tsunamis combined with random swells. The results of these studies eventually informed the selection of wave conditions used for the primary experiments conducted in March 2010.
