Experiment-4: Test of Diagonally Reinforced Coupling Beam at Aspect Ratio 2.4 with Full Confinement and PT Slab (CB24F-PT)
Experiment Type: Large Scale
Description: This experiment consists of cyclic testing of a diagaonlly reinforced concrete coupling beam with confinement around the entire cross section. This confinement represents the new detailing option introduced in ACI 318-08. The beam has aspect ratio (ln/h) 2.4 to represent typical residential construction. The specimen also has a post-tensioned concrete floor slab. The specimen is designated as CB24F-PT or Beam 4. Because ACI does not consider anything but the diagonal reinforcement in determining strength, the purpose of the experiment is to assess the impact of the floor slab on coupling beam strength and ductility. Also, the increased axial load provided by the strands works to restrain the axial elongation of the beam (consistent with conditions in a building). Results indicate that the floor slab provides increased ductility and increased strength consistent with that expected due to the applied axial load, larger concrete area, and slab reinforcement.
